Tie Dyeing

Tie dyeing is a fun science experiment. Tie dying techniques are used in fashion. Tie dyeing t-shirts for example are very popular among young people.

Tie dyeing works by preventing dye reaching some parts of the cloth so that white patterns are left in the colored material.

There are many tie dying techniques and you can be very artistic in tie dying.

Equipment needed for the tie dying experiment

Tie dying is easy and you can do tie dying at home. All you need to start your tie dying science project is an old handkerchief or old piece of cloth, string or thread, a cold water dye from a hardware store or you can make your own dye.

Tie dyeing instructions

Follow the tie dyeing instructions below to begin your tie dying experience.

  1. Make up the dye according to the instructions (either make your own dye or buy from a hardware store).
  2. Decide where you would like the patterns to appear on the cloth. Pull a cone of fabric from these areas through your finger or thumb and tie a piece of thread tightly around it. Then tie a second piece of thread or string just below the first one.
  3. Complete the tie dyeing process and then cut the threads.

Results of tie dying

The tight thread keep the dye away from the material just below them. These areas sty white and make flower shaped patterns on the cloth.
