Effects of water temperature
This section of Science Experiments deals
with effects of water temperature change. The effects of water
temperature science fair experiment is one of the very simple
home science experiments.
Purpose of this science experiment
The purpose of this science experiment is to
explore expansion of water.
What happens when water freezes? why does
water expand when it freezes? why does water expand when
frozen?
Does water expend or contract under
different temperature? All these science experiments questions
are often asked. Below is the science experiments that will
show the effects of water temperature on water.
The concept of expansion and contraction of water and other
metals
Many things (including water) expand or
contract when they change temperature. Have you ever noticed,
when standing by a railroad track, why there are gaps in the
rails at certain intervals? The spaces in the rails allow them
room to "grow," in case they expand; otherwise, the rails would
buckle. Track
engineers know exactly how big the gaps should be to allow for
this rail expansion.
If you have electric baseboard heat in your
home, you may have heard the crackling sounds it makes when the
metal fins heat up or cool down. That's because the fins are
expanding and contracting. Gaps in the roadway of bridges are
also there to allow for expansion and contraction from
temperature changes.
Equipment you will need for this science fair
experiment
In this effects of water temperature science experiment, you
need
• empty metal soup can
• water
• use of a freezer
• small bowl
